When we take rhetorical analysis and use it on different media we can get very different results. For example in class yesterday when we used rhetorical analysis on the music video "Get By" we had so many thing to analysis, from the instruments to the people and colors displayed throughout the video itself. It's harder to analyze because there are so many different details to analyze; however it is also easier to analyze because there is a visual and musical depiction of the text instead of just words. In class we first watched the video with no sound and just analyzed the video from just seeing the visual depiction placed throughout the video without hearing the instruments or lyrics of the song we only saw the video of the urban environment and the people and their struggles they went through to get by in a tough economic situation. Then we watched it a second time with the sound um muted and the lyrics provided. We heard the tone and repetition throughout the song and also looked at the lyrics themselves and the story they told that was reinforced by the beat and tempo with the visuals of the video itself. We can learn so much about how difficult or easy it can be to analyze different objects because there are many different ways to view different things

I like the perspective you have on different methods of analyzing media. I took the assignment in a different direction because I said that analyzing from a factual perspective would be more difficult than doing so from an emotional standpoint. The music video seemed to evoke more emotion for me when we watched it without the music.
ReplyDeletei agree, the message was much more powerful when the beat and music was added, not only does it make people listen it, it makes them more apt to take it in and think about it, which makes it more effective.
