When examining a piece of media it's a much different approach than it would be if we were examining a text. With text you are able to break the text down and deeply analyze it but with music videos or art you have to take what is given to you for face value. When looking at literature the words the artist uses to convey his/her point is the most important device when searching for rhetoric. In comparison, when looking at media things such as body language and lighting would be an influential part of rhetoric. These differences are something that an analytical person would take into account before sitting down and examining these different forms of art. Although with music videos you can really use a combination of both because it has two different components; a visual and auditory. For example, when we watched Talib Kweli's video we were able to observe the scenery without hearing the auditory part. When we added the words it changed part of the meaning of the overall music video. Therefore I feel that no matter if you have a piece of literature or media it is important to realize how to break down the deeper meanings.

ReplyDeleteIf you think about it, though, everything is a text since we can read images/songs/books/paintings as long as we know what their parts are. I think you are right about how important it is to realize that finding the deeper meaning is important.
